School goes for bronze

A Surrey school is celebrating attaining bronze status for Investors in People, the nationally recognised award.

Auriol Junior School, in Vale Road, Epsom, was first recognised as an Investor in People in 2002 but has now gone beyond the Standard to achieve the additional recognition of Investors in People Bronze. The school has 390 pupils aged from seven to 11, around 40 teaching staff and has an integrated support unit for children with hearing impairment.

Investors in People provides a framework for continuous improvement that can help organisations of all sizes and sectors meet goals and adapt to change. The additional recognition, introduced earlier this year, of bronze, silver and gold status is designed to celebrate success and to stretch those organisations that are doing particularly well.

Head teacher at Auriol, Gail Larkin, said she had decided the whole school would benefit from taking on the challenge of achieving bronze status. She said: “I think we knew that we could attain the basic standard and we wanted to stretch ourselves a bit. It’s important for us to be able to do things that are good for the school as a whole.

“Auriol achieved good and outstanding standards in our last Ofsted report. I firmly believe that working with Investors in People, ensuring for example that all staff have continuous professional development, helps when it comes to Ofsted.

“Investors in People is appreciated by Ofsted and it is an award to be valued.”

Mrs Larkin has been a head teacher for 18 years and is a National Executive member of the National Association of Head Teachers.

Commenting on the school’s achievement, Trish Fraser, Managing Director of Quality South East, the Investors in People centre for Surrey said: “It is good to hear that head teachers value the time spent working with us and that it is beneficial to the whole school when it comes to that all-important Ofsted report.”
