Council crowned champion

Elmbridge Borough Council has become one of a prestigious group of role model organisations by being crowned an Investors in People champion.

Having recently been awarded Investors in People Gold status, meaning that the Council has gone beyond the nationally recognised Standard and achieved the highest award possible, Elmbridge will now promote Investors in People through a series of best practice sharing activities.

Investors in People provides a framework for continuous improvement that can help organisations of all sizes and sectors meet goals and adapt to change. The additional recognition, introduced earlier this year, of bronze, silver and gold status is designed to celebrate success and to stretch those organisations that are doing particularly well.

Robert Moran, Chief Executive of Elmbridge Borough Council, said: “We are delighted that our achievements with Investors in People have been recognised and we will definitely be taking our new champion status very seriously. One of the main benefits is that we are not only able to pass on our own ideas but we are able to pick up tips from other organisations – learning from each other is invaluable.”

As part of the Council’s duties as an Investors in People champion, staff will be holding open days and visiting other organisations to promote examples of best practice.

“Investors in People has to be embedded in an organisation in order for it to work,” continued Mr Moran. “It has become even more valuable to us since the economic downturn. With such pressure on public budgets the principles behind Investors in People, such as clear communication and involving staff, are becoming increasingly important. The good practice that Investors in People brings will prove its worth time and time again as we head for uncertain times.”

Elmbridge Borough Council has an Investors in People working group that ensures staff keep their focus on the Council’s improvement plan and makes sure they do not lose sight of their day to day objectives.

Companies working with Investors in People report numerous benefits including increased productivity, a higher level of customer satisfaction and reduced costs, sickness levels and staff turnover. Elmbridge Borough Council’s assessment was managed by Quality South East, the Investors in People centre for the region.
